Status vs Power
Status is what people think of you. Power is what you can make happen.
The two are confused so often that the confusion has become part of the language. People speak of “powerful figures” when they mean famous ones. They speak of “high-status leaders” when they mean ones with the authority to fire. The blur in the language reflects a blur in the thinking, and the blur produces consistent strategic error. People chase the wrong variable. They invest in signals when they should be building capacity, or build capacity when they should be cultivating perception. Knowing which is which — and when each matters — is one of the foundations of social and professional judgment.
